Habitability · Mission

Our North Star

Observe the world continuously. Preserve what the evidence means. Make change legible.

The founding question

Where can humans thrive next?

A continuously evolving observatory

Habitability is a continuously evolving observatory of the conditions for human life across territories and over time.

Its mission is to discover, qualify, connect, preserve and explain scientific evidence about how environmental, demographic, economic and social conditions evolve and interact.

Built and progressively maintained with artificial intelligence, Habitability aims to become an increasingly autonomous, trustworthy and accessible knowledge system.

Its purpose is not to rank places, but to make territorial change intelligible.

Three lasting ambitions

A living scientific observatory

Continuously discover, qualify, integrate and connect scientific evidence about changing territorial conditions.

An AI-built and AI-maintained knowledge system

Experiment with artificial intelligence as a means of developing, operating, auditing and improving a complex scientific system with minimal human intervention.

A continuously growing digital asset

Preserve historical observations, methods, data, relationships and visualizations so that the observatory becomes progressively richer and more useful.

Commercial applications may emerge, but are not the primary objective.

How success is measured

Habitability's success is measured by the quality, depth, continuity and usefulness of its knowledge, and by its ability to grow with minimal human intervention.

Permanent principles

  • A territory is a trajectory, not a snapshot.
  • Source before claim.
  • Observe before predicting.
  • Measure before ranking.
  • Preserve uncertainty and historical revisions.
  • Connect evidence without inventing causality.
  • Automate operations without weakening scientific governance.
  • Keep human intervention focused on consequential decisions.

Four questions for understanding a territory

H-D-A-R is Habitability's user-facing territorial framework. Its four meanings are canonical:

H · Habitability

Can we inhabit this place?

D · Desirability

Can we thrive here?

A · Affordability

Can people afford to remain here, and can the conditions of habitability remain accessible?

R · Resilience

Can this place resist, adapt and recover as conditions change?

These questions guide interpretation. They do not replace scientific evidence, imply a universal score or authorize unsupported claims.

Built to learn over time

Observation, interpretation and outlook remain distinct. New evidence and revisions should remain traceable, uncertainty should stay visible, and scientific or consequential public decisions remain subject to the required human review.

GitHub's canonical project documents govern the mission and its evidence rules. Any substantive change to this North Star requires an explicit Founder decision.
